The benefits of using sniffer dogs at events

All types of events face a number of security and infrastructure challenges including festivals, concerts, exhibitions and sporting events.

Major events now demand a comprehensive quality-orientated approach to event security and companies, more so now than ever, are turning to specialist Canine sniffer dog companies to support them in creating a safe and secure environment for their visitors.

There are many benefits to using sniffer dogs at events to enhance security measures. Canine specialists will successfully plan and prepare for each event from a safety and security aspect to ensure your event runs as smoothly as possible. Canine sniffer dogs and their handlers will support your operations allowing you more time to focus on your business plans and the success of your events.

Sniffer dogs are an asset in any large crowd at events to combat the terrorist and drug users or dealers that may attend such venues, working along the lines at the entrances allows for none admittance of such people in to your venue, making it a safer place for everyone.

One notable quality of canine sniffer dogs is that they are able to identify individual scents and more importantly when there are dozens of other scents in the area, which is why sniffer dogs are more commonly used at events. Sniffer dogs are extremely versatile, efficient and effective at what they do.

Dogs smell using the same reflexes as humans but are better than us at detecting odours. Their noses are larger than ours so they can inhale more air per sniff. They also have more odour receptors than us and their noses are more sensitive. Certain breeds of Canines can contain over three hundred million receptors in their noses compared to about thirty million for humans

Sniffer dogs and their handlers will have the knowledge and experience to help prevent and detect, drugs, explosives and firearms. Canine Service providers should hold the following licenses and accreditation to work at events:

  • BS 8517.1: 2009 Security Dogs (for the use of General Purpose Security Dogs)
  • BS 8517.2: 2009 Security Dogs (Drugs and Explosive Detection Dogs)
  • HABC approved trainers and have DBS & CTC clearance
  • ACPO (Association of Chief Security Officers) Accredited Dogs and Handlers
  • NASDU Inspected company Members – National Association of Security Dog Users
  • All Dogs and Handlers  ideally should be trained and accredited to ACPO (Association of Chief Police Officers) Standards at a Police Dog Training School
  • All Dogs and Handlers should be accredited to relevant level of HABC (Highfield Awarding Body Council)
  • All Handlers should be trained Security Officers, holding SIA Door Supervisor Licences
